The Young And The Restless (Y&R) has had its share of characters whose personalities not only clashed, but who also despised each other from the get-go. So, leading up to the Y&R’s 50th Anniversary on March 26, let’s revel in the Young And The Restless’ most epic rivalries.
9. Phyllis Summers And Diane Jenkins
Phyllis Summers (Michelle Stafford) and Diane Jenkins (Susan Walters) have been bitter enemies for years. She meddled in Phyllis and Jack Abbott’s (Peter Bergman) marriage by revealing Kyle Abbott (Michael Mealor) was his son and continued plotting to break them up. Diane also ended up framing Phyllis for murder and arson. But her interference ended when she was killed by Nikki Newman (Melody Thomas Scott).
However, now that Diane has been resurrected, she finally succeeded in stealing Jack away from Phyllis. And it’s not sitting well with the fiery red head. She’s hell bent on revenge and has teamed up with Jeremy Stark (James Hyde) to get it. But will Phyllis succeed?
8. Billy Abbott And Adam Newman
Billy Abbott (Jason Thompson) has good reason to hate Adam Newman (Mark Grossman). In 2013, Billy left his daughter Delia Abbott (Sophie Pollono) in his vehicle, to run into a store for ice cream. Adam drove by and thought he’d hit something. So, he got out of his car to look around but didn’t realize what had happened. However, when he later discovered Delia’s scarf in a wheel well, he covered it up.
Of course, Billy eventually found out what Adam had done and he attempted, unsuccessfully, to kill him twice. Although Billy will never forgive Adam, he has tried to make peace with what happened. And these days, the two rivals have found themselves sparring over Billy’s budding relationship with Chelsea Newman (Melissa Claire Egan). But who will come out on top?
7. Hilary Curtis And Lily Winters
One of the most bitter Young And The Restless Rivalries was between Lily Winters (Christel Khalil) and Hilary Curtis (Mishael Morgan). Hilary became involved in a love triangle with Lily’s brother and father, and she hated her for it. In 2014, Lily dumped a pitcher of freezing cold water on Hilary’s head while she was asleep. And she accused her of destroying her family.
Unfortunately, this epic rivalry led to Hilary’s untimely demise in 2018. As she and her nemesis battled it out while Lily was driving, she ran a red light. A truck t-boned them and a pregnant Hilary passed away a few days later.
Y&R Rivalries – Sharon Wasn’t Good Enough For Nick
6. Nikki Newman And Sharon Newman
Former stripper Nikki Newman (Melody Thomas Scott) never believed Sharon Newman (Sharon Case) was good enough for her son Nick Newman (Joshua Morrow). Over the years, they’ve gotten into bitter arguments that have turned into catfights.
One of the highlights was in 2012, when the two women battled it out in the Newman stables. Nikki declared war on Sharon and poured a bottle of water over her head. Then they ended up rolling around in the hay, fist fighting and pulling each other’s hair.
5. Phyllis Summers And Christine Williams
Many new Y&R viewers haven’t yet seen Phyllis’ dark side like seasoned viewers have. Shortly after Phyllis arrived in Genoa City, she stalked Christine Williams’ (Lauralee Bell) husband Danny Romalotti (Michael Damian). Eventually, Danny gave in to her advances and they slept together.
But when she got pregnant, he left Christine and married Phyllis. However, Phyllis still considered Danny’s ex a threat to her marriage. And in 1994, she ran over Christine and her fiancé Paul Williams (Doug Davidson) and got away with it, something that still bothers Christine to this very day.
4. Neil Winters And Devon Hamilton
Devon Hamilton (Bryton James) has been obsessed lately with keeping his father’s legacy alive. Neil Winters (the late Kristoff St. John) died in his sleep in 2019 and Devon thinks about him often. But there was a time when the father and son were bitter rivals.
Devon pursued his father’s wife Hilary shortly after she married Neil. And the two of them began a torrid affair. But Hilary felt obligated to stay with Neil after he went blind. Once Neil recovered his sight and found out, he kept pretending he was sightless and plotted revenge on the pair. However, he eventually gave the couple his blessing when they got married in 2015.
Young And The Restless Rivalries – Sheila Tortured Lauren
3. Lauren Fenmore And Sheila Carter
When Sheila Carter (Kimberlin Brown) arrived in Genoa City in 1990, the first thing she did was dig her hooks into Lauren Femmore’s (Tracey E Bregman) husband. Dr. Scott Grainger (Peter Barton) ended up cheating on his wife with the nurse. But when Sheila and Lauren ended up pregnant at the same time, Sheila switched her own stillborn child with Lauren’s.
The villainous nurse tortured Lauren for decades. “Even now, when I’ve been assured she was dead, I don’t really believe it,” Lauren recently stated on Y&R. “But if that bitch decides to resurrect and she comes near me or anyone that I love, she will wish she’d stayed dead.”
2. Jill Abbott And Katherine Chancellor
Katherine Chancellor (the late Jeanne Cooper) and Jill Abbott’s (Jess Walton) feud began in the early days of Y&R, shortly after Katherine hired Jill as her paid companion. Katherine’s husband Phillip Chancellor II (the late Donnelly Rhodes) caught Jill’s eye and they began a tawdry affair, which resulted in Jill getting pregnant.
When The Old Battle-axe (as Jill called her) found out her husband had flown to the Dominican Republic to get a quickie divorce, she confronted Phillip after she picked him up from the airport. Katherine then crashed the car, seriously injuring her husband. Phillip married Jill on his death bed but Katherine had the marriage invalidated. This led to years of the women stealing each other’s lovers and husbands. And of course, it also led to some epic catfights. Although eventually, these two epic rivals did make peace with each other.
1. Victor Newman And Jack Abbott
One of the longest running Young And The Restless Rivalries has been between Jack and Victor Newman (Eric Braeden). In fact, the two business titans have been battling it out for decades. Their feud began as a business grudge and spiraled from there. When Victor took over Jabot in 2005, Jack threw his chair out the window and told Victor to have a seat. But not only did Victor steal Jabot out from under his nemesis, he also went a step further in 2015.
Victor had Jack kidnapped and hired a doppelganger, Marco Annicelli, to replace him. However, Jack managed to escape his bonds and returned to Genoa City. He then exposed Victor’s crimes, but as usual The Mustache got away with it. Most recently, Victor plotted to remove Adam from his co-CEO job at Jabot and it worked. To this day, both Jack and Victor remain wary of each other.
